You are welcome here! These lands have been stewarded since time immemorial…
Current stewards of wild and working lands in Butte, Glenn, and Tehama County are community members. As stewards grow crops for sale at farmers’ markets, raise free-range chickens and beef for purchase near and far, and protect mountain landscapes by establishing ecological functions that won’t encroach on the watershed, restoring wet meadow hydrology and planting native shrubs, grasses and shade trees, we listen to their needs, and when possible, connect them with resources to aide in their efforts.
In Deer Creek watershed, your support of the land trust maintains access to a creek-side trail for all to enjoy. With our partners USFS and Sierra Pacific Industry, the sites, sounds, and smells of the Sierra Nevada are a short drive and sweet hike away. Our fee title agreement facilitates access for resource managers who are mandated to protect and enhance this ecosystem’s function, to continue work that protects and expands the possibilities that salmon will persist despite all odds.
Since time immemorial, land stewards have sustained relationships with the waters, the woods, and the soils that create this beautiful setting in which we recreate, produce, and find stillness. Our region has cultural complexities that scholars try, and sometimes (often?) fail, to make sense of. As a land trust, we are cognizant that land returns and reparations are core components of restorative justice. These are complicated agreements and can bring strong emotions to the surface. Northern California Regional Land Trust is attempting to be part of the solution.
As Northern California Regional Land Trust explores opportunities to participate in this process, we welcome community engagement in respectful dialogue for building ideas that will lead to partnership for restoring cultural connections to the people whose ancestors stewarded the lands, in agreement with current stewards and community partners. This is a complicated, emotional, and sometimes imperfect process, and we will remain steadfast in our solutions-based efforts to facilitate an outcome that improves access and relationships for all.
