Local Boy Scout Chapter helps on Preserve!
Boy Scouts of America has been around for more than 100 years creating generations of leaders and nature-loving citizens. This year we had the good fortune to work with a local Chico troop on a project for our Deer Creek Preserve. Note: The Preserve is right on the uncontained fire line of the Park Fire and so far we have been lucky, the fire has only slightly crossed the boundaries. We continue to work with Cal Fire for any new information.
Two years ago, the Land Trust thought it was time to install trail signs to mark the Deer Creek Trail as it runs through our Preserve, so we had the signs created. They sat in our office as we asked around for volunteers to help us install the signs. We did not have much luck, until we connected with Troop 3 of Boy Scouts in Chico. The Scouts jumped at the opportunity to help, us, and we could not be more grateful.
After a design meeting and a bit of shopping, we were ready to get to work so we planned a workday. Several Troop 3 Scouts and their parents showed up to help. The Scouts learned how to measure precisely for cutting plywood, how to prep posts, drill the attachment holes in the signs, stain the wood, and finally how to assemble the final product. They worked as a team to ensure the printed signs were firmly attached to the frames they constructed. The signs are now ready to be installed.
We at the Land Trust are so excited that the trails signs are finally ready to go out, once the Park Fire is extinguished, on the Preserve. We are planning the installation day now so stay tuned for further updates on our trail sign project with the Boy Scouts of Troop 3!
