Notes from the Field

January 2022

To kick off 2022, our incoming Stewardship Coordinator shares some reflections on her path to conservation, the value of travel, and the importance of nature in discovering a sense of place.

Hello! My name is Hannah. I am the new Stewardship Coordinator. I am currently going through the process of acclimating myself to a new area and my new position. I am so excited to be here with NCRLT, as well as in California!

I am from Kentucky, the land of bluegrass, bourbon, and horses. Kentucky’s beautiful green spaces and large family farms helped me to discover my appreciation and love of nature. I studied at the University of Kentucky (Go Wildcats!) for my undergraduate degrees. It was while I was there I truly began to find my passion for conservation. I dabbled in different areas but I kept coming back to the one thing that I found peace and hope in: the outdoors. So I found a Master’s program that suited me and on a whim I applied to a program in London, England that centered around conservation and land stewardship practices in action. I was accepted and I never looked back. It was the best decision I had ever made.

I spent time on the island nation of Mauritius learning about forest health and management, in Norfolk learning about the power of backyard conservation projects, and on the island of Lundy learning about the breeding and feeding behaviors of local seabirds. My learning opportunities varied, and it only made me appreciate the wonder of nature even more. Nature has so many lessons to teach us, if we are only willing to listen.

After returning to the States, I worked in Missouri and Vermont. Each location was extraordinary for its own unique features. In Missouri, I saw the most beautiful, crystal clear spring waters I had ever seen. I couldn’t wait for the next trip out to see what else I could discover. In Vermont, I was able to experience winter like I had never before. The fun that can be had in fresh snow is undeniable. I believe they do winter the way it is meant to be. It has been a joy to experience and work in so many beautiful landscapes across the world.

Now that I am newly planted in California, I cannot wait to explore and discover the many beautiful and unique features here. Spending time outside in nature is truly one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, I believe. In Chico, thus far, I have found the [very large] Bidwell Park. It really is a special place but I can’t wait to continue my exploration of the area. I am also looking forward to seeing each property that NCRLT has worked to conserve in partnership with committed landowners. I am lucky to have found NCRLT, allowing me to work in a field about which I feel so passionately. I hope you have enjoyed getting to know me a bit better and I cannot wait to get to know you.

Best,

Hannah
